GalleryFOUR: Land

Hillside &

   Flatland

changing effects on panorama

The dramatic rolling hills of the South Downs,

are the main inspiration for  large canvases, whereas shorter walks on flatter landscapes

have evoked the spontaneity of fleeting experiences, often created on a small scale

with large intuitive marks and brushstrokes.

Natural materials gathered through these walks,

are a great source of experimentation, sometimes mixed with accepted art materials.

the hidden details of landscape

Organic Rock

Walking on stony ground, our human feet naturally meet organic forms of invisible fauna, unbeknownst to us, alongside flint, chalk and larger stone. These rocks are shown off by the sun, whilst doused by the rain.

The artist's experience of this physical contact with hard landscape,  evokes feelings of

a deeper universal spiritual significance,

not least, through feelings of collectiveness

between species and the wider ecosystem.

Back in the studio, consciously working on

a smaller, more condensed scale, even microscopic, brings to light interpretations

of flora and fauna hidden from view.

Fragmented Landscape

The sense of a disturbed landscape is created intentionally to form a puzzle to jar the eye
and shift the composition. By using assembled parts, a patchwork of  distant background parts of hills and horizons is created, juxtaposed with the closer vistas and sometimes mixing this up.

To create these parts, unwanted croppings or tearings  from previous work are collected and upcycled, emphasising the need
to save and re-use resources.
